What is Smart Landfilling?
Smart Landfilling is Tana’s landfill operating concept. It combines material diversion, shredding, and compaction to help operators make better use of available landfill airspace and boost operational efficiency.
The Smart Landfilling approach follows four key steps:
- Incoming waste is weighed and directed to sorting and recycling where applicable
- Divertible materials are removed before disposal
- Waste is processed near the working face
- Shredded material is immediately compacted
The method provides various advantages for landfill owners and operators. The practice of Smart Landfilling follows an efficient workflow that reduces fuel use, machine hours, and unnecessary material handling. Moreover, it offers possibilities for recycling and material recovery. For example, valuable materials such as ferrous metals can be sorted out and sold to scrap facilities as an additional revenue stream. Additionally, tires, wood, green waste, etc. can be reused as alternative daily cover (ADC).
In addition, shredding waste before compaction improves overall landfill performance. It reduces bulky waste to a more uniform particle size, making it compact more evenly. As a result, waste density increases, landfill cells become more stable, and less airspace is used. This leads to higher compaction rates, more efficient use of landfill airspace, and a longer landfill lifespan.
Up to 45%
more compaction
Utilizing Smart Landfilling has helped landfills achieve 25–45% additional compaction, resulting in major airspace savings and extended landfill lifespan.
Why Smart Landfilling?
Maximum airspace utilization
Shredding waste before compaction increases compaction density by over 30%. This saves valuable airspace, extends the landfill life expectancy, and postpones costly expansions and new permits.
Backed by data
Independent studies and real-world landfill data confirm over 30% improvement in compaction efficiency, making Smart Landfilling a validated and reliable operating model.
Lower total cost per cubic yard of airspace
Higher density extends the life of each cell, minimizes daily cover needs, and reduces fuel & labor costs, directly improving operating margins.

The role of TANA in Smart Landfilling
The full benefits of Smart Landfilling are achieved when shredding and compaction work together as a system. Using a TANA shredder and TANA landfill compactor enables:
Because both machines are engineered for landfill conditions, operators benefit from shared spare parts, common service practices, and unified technical support.
Performance you can measure
Smart Landfilling is a data-driven process with benefits that can easily be measured.
TanaConnect® offers built-in intelligence in TANA machines. The fleet management system collects, analyzes, and presents data from TANA machines to streamline operations and enhance productivity.
With TanaConnect®, landfill operators can:
This makes airspace savings visible and measurable for both operational management and long-term planning.
TANA landfill compactors
“They compact the best, they’re the best on the operators, and they’re easy to service. I would say in the last six years we’ve probably had about a 97% uptime with these machines, plus 50 gallons a day less per machine in fuel.”
John Keith, Coastal Regional Solid Waste, North Carolina
TANA waste shredders
“I would encourage anybody to look at the TANA shredder as an option to help save some of that airspace. We take care of just about every product that comes through the landfill with that machine, and it changed everything for us. It was a game changer.”
Steve Raines, Solid Waste for Pickens County, South Carolina
